Questions Claude can answer from your Xero data

Xero is cloud accounting software for small and medium-sized businesses. Dataddo extracts invoices, payments and bank transactions as well as Xero reports such as Aged Receivables, Bank summary, Profit and Loss and Budget summary.

Budget variance for the board pack

Ask Claude

Compare Profit and Loss Value by Item for Q3 with Reports - Budget summary by Account for July to September. Where are we furthest over budget?

The FP&A lead asks Claude for the months and accounts that moved most against budget, checks those lines, and drafts the variance commentary before it goes into the board pack.

Close checklist from the trial balance

Ask Claude

Use the dataddo server to pull Trial Balance Debit, Credit, YTD Debit and YTD Credit by Account Code and write close/checklist.md.

In the close repository, a finance engineer asks Claude Code to flag accounts with unexpected movement and commits a markdown checklist the team works through before sign-off.

Cash across every organization

Ask Claude

Show Closing Balance from Reports - Bank summary per Xero Tenant Id and Bank Account for last week, with a group total.

A group controller with several Xero organizations asks Claude once, and the weekly cash position covers every entity instead of one file per organization.

With vs. without

Xero in Claude, with and without Dataddo

Without Dataddo With Dataddo Outcome for you
Report-shaped data Each Xero report is a separate export, and Budget summary keeps months as columns that someone reshapes before Claude can compare it with actuals. Profit and Loss and Reports - Budget summary arrive as datasets Claude queries by field, with January to December as named columns. Variance without reshaping
Several organizations Groups repeat every export per Xero organization and merge the files, often losing track of which row came from which entity. Multi-account extraction pulls the same datasets from every organization, and each row keeps its Xero Tenant Id for Claude to split or total. Group view in one answer
Working in a repository Close scripts read CSV files someone saved locally, and the checklist is stale as soon as new journals are posted in Xero. Claude Code queries Trial Balance and Journal Lines through the dataddo server, with your credentials kept in the system keychain. Close files built from fresh data
Older periods Asking about last year returns nothing useful because the uploaded file only covered the current quarter. Date-range datasets such as Invoices re-read a sliding window, and a one-time full data re-sync loads earlier periods for Claude to query. Earlier periods queryable
Token consumption Claude spends tokens exploring raw Xero columns, sampling rows and retrying until it understands the data. Field definitions and relations are supplied up front, so the model skips the exploration and goes straight to the answer. Less tokens per answer
Answer quality Prone to wrong joins, invented fields and numbers that are hard to check. Answers grounded in defined fields. In the Dataddo benchmark, 78.5% of questions were answered correctly, against 65.5% with plain CSV files. Better answers

Runs on your schedule, for example daily. Datasets with a date range, such as Invoices and Profit and Loss, re-read a sliding window, so older history needs a one-time full data re-sync. Contacts and Accounts pull all current records.

Benchmark

More right answers. Half the confident mistakes.

We asked 43 pre-registered questions of three real datasets - Google Search Console, HubSpot deals and Google Ads - and delivered the same rows to the same model in four ways. Only the data layer changed.

78.5%

of questions answered correctly - the best of the four delivery methods tested

2x

fewer confidently wrong answers - 14.0% of runs against 24.0% and 26.3%

2.8x

more correct answers on messy CRM data - better on 8 questions, worse on none

Answered correctly All 43 questions - higher is better
Wrong, but stated as fact Share of runs - lower is better

Same model, prompts and rows in every condition; 759 graded runs, ground truth frozen before any run. On Google Search Console alone, documented CSV files did as well as Data to AI™ - the advantage comes from messier data such as HubSpot deals.

FAQ

Xero and Claude: FAQ

How do I connect Xero to Claude?

Set up a Xero source in Dataddo with datasets such as Invoices, Reports - Aged Receivables Summary and Reports - Bank summary, and attach it to a Claude destination or AI Model. Then add the custom connector Dataddo Data Access in Claude with https://headless.dataddo.com/mcp-data, or run claude mcp add in Claude Code.

Can Claude answer across several Xero organizations?

Yes. Turn on multi-account extraction in the Xero source. Each row keeps its Xero Tenant Id, so Claude can split or total figures by organization.

Does Claude get Xero reports or only raw transactions?

Both. Reports such as Aged Receivables Summary, Bank summary, Budget summary, Profit and Loss and Trial Balance are datasets of their own, next to Invoices, Payments and Journal Lines.

Why is older Xero data missing in Claude?

Date-range datasets such as Invoices read a sliding window on each run. Load earlier periods with a full data re-sync, and Claude can then query them like current data.

Can I query Xero from Claude Code?

Yes. Run claude mcp add --transport http dataddo with the Data Access URL, sign in with /mcp, and ask about Xero entities from your terminal while you work in a repository.

Can Claude create invoices or approve bills in Xero?

No. Claude only reads data Dataddo has already extracted, by entity and field name. Dataddo never accepts SQL from the model and nothing is written back to Xero.

Does every Claude user need their own Dataddo login?

On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds the connector once and each member signs in with their own Dataddo account. On Pro and Max you add it yourself.
